Operator Wins 2009 FPTA Operator of the Year

Doris Williams certainly enjoyed the anniversary date of her hiring with the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (LYNX). On October 27, the 27 year operator was named the 2009 Florida Public Transportation Association (FPTA) Operator of the Year at the group’s annual conference. This is the first time a LYNX operator has earned this statewide distinction.

“Doris Williams demonstrates exactly what LYNX looks for in our Operators, a perfect safety record along with a smile and pleasant greeting for every customer and co-worker,” said LYNX CEO Linda S. Watson.  “I could not be more proud of her or for her. She deserves this honor.”

Said Williams, “It is all about kindness and treating people right.  If you do that everything else falls into place.”

Williams has obtained certifications in every program offered by LYNX including “Terrorist Activity Recognition and Reaction” and “Enhancing Quality Service with Diversity in the Workplace.”

The longtime operator also plays a vital role in the agency’s Mentor Program.  This select group of bus operators and transportation supervisors volunteer to assist, guide, tutor and encourage new operators.  Williams also has served as a bus operator  trainer.

LYNX recently received a letter from a passenger commending Williams’ work.

“My daughter travels on a scooter due to a muscle weakness and using your system is easier for her than a car.  She and I have been fortunate to ride with Doris Williams several times over the past few months.  Doris always greets us with a genuine welcoming attitude.  She is careful of her positioning to allow the scooter easy off and on access.  Just before your recent schedule change, Doris made sure we were aware of the change and offered an updated schedule.

I am a former VP of Operations and GM for transit systems in LA, Ohio, and Massachusetts so please know that I can tell the difference between a good bus operator and a bad one.  I have been impressed with Doris’ outstanding customer relations and driving skills.  I hope you can identify her and recognize her on my behalf.”
